HONG KONG, DAY ONE!

We woke up to a sunny morning in Hong Kong!  There was rain forecasted for the entire time we were there, so this was a BONUS!  John met a past business associate for a big traditional Hong Kong breakfast,

while I enjoyed a leisurely morning before taking a walk around our hotel.  Last night the streets were FILLED with people—and it was 10:00 on a Tuesday night!  I figured that this morning the streets would be empty—quite the contrary!  (Do people ever sleep in HK?)

Everywhere I went, I was reminded that it was Chinese New Year!

I was interested in why so many mandarin oranges were used in the holiday decor and Google obliged me with the answer!

John and I met up back at the hotel and decided to head straight to Victoria’s Peak since it was such a beautiful day.  We found the subway (easy peasy as it was a block away), purchased an Octopus Card (I was not quite sure how I felt about being called out as an ELDER!), and then began the process of figuring out what train to take where.  (John earned an A+ for his figuring it out skills!)

The subway in Hong Kong was absolutely spotless!

After we arrived at the train station, we boarded a bus that took us up a very precarious route to the peak.  “Precarious” being the operative word here!  The views were absolutely beautiful! (But it was darn hard to try to catch those views in photos while moving!)

The bus dropped us off at the top of Victoria’s Peak and we were surprised by how much it had changed   (or by how much we had forgotten)!  Many years ago we brought Jon and Jas over and took them to Victoria’s Peak (guys, does any of this look familiar to you, by chance?)

It has always been totally against our religion to eat American when overseas, however, Bubba Gump Shrimp Co. had the best views (and the coldest beers), so Bubba Gump’s it was!

To put things in perspective, Victoria’s Peak is where the blue dot is, we are staying across Victoria Harbor in Kowloon, and will pick up our boat, the Regent Explorer, on Saturday at the Ocean Terminal.  Our hotel is an eight minute walk to the terminal, except when you are pulling a two wheeler and a backpack!  We will be taking a cab!

We opted to take the tram down and it was scenic, fast, and not nearly as scary as the bus ride up!

Hong Kong is a beautiful city, with luxurious parks,

exotic flowers,

and amazing buildings.

Flower pots filled with ORCHIDS are scattered around the downtown streets!  Breathtaking!

Because of the BIG lunch we had at Bubba Gump’s, we looked around for LIGHT dinner choices!  I spotted a place with Pho (Vietnamese soup) on its’ menu with a Thai Massage Salon close by.  (It doesn’t get better than that!)  We enjoyed every slurp (they do that here) of the soup and later,

every minute of our massages!

These chairs were empty when my massage started and full by the time we left!

Interesting to note:  An hour long Thai foot massage in Thailand is approximately $10.00.  An hour long Thai foot massage in Hong Kong is approximately $40.00!  Likewise, in Thailand salons are very quiet.  In Hong Kong (at least at THIS salon) a television was on in the background.  A television IS NOT conducive to a relaxing massage! On that note, GOOD NIGHT!
